Linkages to other Standards

The standard is designed to encompass key aspects of sustainability relevant to most consumer products regardless of their sector.

Over time, the standard will build linkages and recognize product-specific (e.g., paper, food, electronics) and issue-specific (fair wages, climate) standards that have achieved broad global uptake, have been developed through a multi-stakeholder process, and adhere to a high level of transparency.

Renew

Renew focuses on the impact that products have on the environment. It encourages efficient and renewable energy use and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. It seeks to eliminate, minimize or reuse waste in the product chain and to have minimal adverse effect on air, water and soil quality.

Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction

Energy preservationConventional energy production emits greenhouse gases (GHGs) that contribute to climate change, and therefore energy shall be used efficiently and shall be derived from renewable energy sources as much as possible. Energy efficiency and GHG reduction measures shall be taken and energy use shall be shifted toward renewable energy sources. The remaining GHG emissions shall be offset via internal or third-party carbon offset programs or purchases so that the product is carbon neutral.

Waste Reduction

Waste reductionHazardous and non-hazardous waste generation shall be prevented to the extent possible, waste shall be diverted from landfills and incineration, and where waste generation is unavoidable, controlled disposal shall be assured. Product and packaging design, materials selection, reuse, recycling and/or composting may all contribute to reduced waste generation. Reuse and recycling shall maintain the inherent quality of the material if possible.

Clean Air, Water and Soil

Clean air, water and soilAir, water and soil pollution shall be prevented. Air quality shall not impaired, water resources shall be protected, and the fertility and structure of soil shall be maintained and restored.
