Linkages to other Standards

The framework is designed to encompass key aspects of sustainability relevant to most consumer products regardless of their sector.

Over time, the framework will build linkages and recognize product-specific (e.g., paper, food, electronics) and issue-specific (fair wages, climate) standards that have achieved broad global uptake, have been developed through a multi-stakeholder process, and adhere to a high level of transparency.

Framework process

Version 1.0 of the the Global Sustainability Standard for Products has been developed in a true multi stakeholder and global process. We collaborated with business and not-for-profit sectors, consumer organizations, government, academia and the general public in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa

We are committed to continuous improvement of the framework and the standard in close consultation with our stakeholders and the public. Please find below an overview of the steps we took in this process:

Framework to measure

Pure Fair Life Renew

People 4 Earth is dedicated to playing a pivotal role in driving markets toward sustainable outcomes. The foundation of this effort was the development of a framework for product sustainability that applies to all products and services; and complements existing product-specific standards. It is an innovative, low cost solution that measures all aspects of a product or service's sustainability, and is designed to provide transparency throughout the international supply chain. Furthermore, it enables consumers, companies, and NGOs with the tools to take measurable steps toward sustainable consumption and production.

The People 4 Earth framework unites criteria that address product characteristics with the manner in which a product is made. More specifically, the framework we developed to standardize information is categorized under two broad headings—PEOPLE and EARTH, which in turn rest on four pillars—PURE, FAIR, LIFE, and RENEW. Each pillar, in turn, is broken down into three principles, thus creating a total of 12 principles, which are:

Framework

PurePure addresses the quality of a product in relation to its impacts on the user and local communities. People 4 Earth promotes authentic products that are healthy and safe for all users. Transparency is integral to all steps of the product chain, especially in the product information conveyed to the consumer and in reporting to stakeholders.

FairFair
addresses the treatment of those who work directly in the product chain. People 4 Earth supports fair business practices that promote economic and social justice for all people. Fair is divided into worker rights, education/professional development, and fair trading practices.

LifeLife addresses the use of natural resources in the product and the product chain. It seeks to maintain and restore the diversity of living organisms and the well-being of animals; as well as to prevent the depletion of natural resources. It is divided into biodiversity, animal welfare, and natural resource conservation.

RenewRenew focuses on the impact that products have on the environment. It encourages efficient and renewable energy use and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. It seeks to eliminate, minimize, or reuse waste in the product chain with minimal adverse effects on air, soil, and water quality.
